About the temple
The Church of the Archangel Michael is the first church of the Russian Orthodox Church in Spain and the entire Iberian Peninsula. It was built in the style of 17th-century Russian wooden architecture.
The uniqueness of the Church of the Archangel Michael lies in the fact that, in the two thousand years of Christianity's existence, for the first time in the history of Spain, a Russian Orthodox church was erected on its territory, which became the westernmost outpost of the Russian Orthodox Church on the Eurasian continent.
In the early 1990s, after the fall of the Iron Curtain, waves of immigration from the former Soviet Union began to flow into Spain. Our compatriots from all walks of life in post-Soviet society began settling on the Iberian Peninsula in search of a better life. Faith and religiosity have always been among the most powerful unifying social factors. The Church of the Archangel Michael in Altea is living proof of this. Far from their homeland, it draws people of different nationalities, social statuses, and educational backgrounds under its dome, yet united by the most important thing in life—faith in Christ the Savior.
Throughout history, the spiritual need of people living in exile, torn by God from their homeland, family, culture, and traditions, has been clear. They need to establish a church, to touch a corner of their native land, to communicate in their native language, and to experience the spiritual joy of praying in a Russian Orthodox church. Historically, emigrants who rally around the church preserve their native language, their national traditions, and the culture of their people for generations.
Having left their native land, our compatriots felt a spiritual hunger more acute than ever. This yearning for spirituality inspired the desire to build the first Russian Orthodox Church church in Spain.
The founder and founder of the church is the Botsko family from Rostov-on-Don.
